This Symposium shares insights from the Towards Just Care project, led by Dr. Mary Jean Hande (Assistant Professor, Trent University) in partnership with the Disability Justice Network of Ontario. The project focuses on reimagining more “just” home care systems through grassroots coalition-building. Alana Hart (MA Student, Trent University), Danielle Turpin (President and Founder, Home Care Workers Cooperative), and Mary Jean Hande will discuss community-engaged approaches to building solidarity between older home care receivers and workers through social justice frameworks, “power mapping” existing home care systems, and innovative cooperative models for improving the conditions of work and care.
Presenters: Dr. Mary Jean Hande is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at Trent University. Alana Hart is an MA student in the Interdisciplinary Aging Studies Program at Trent University, is a former Research Assistant on the project, and is currently helping develop a related article on the financialization of home care in Ontario. Danielle Turpin is the Founder and President of the Home Care Workers’ Cooperative and is part of the Towards Just Care Community Advisory Council.
